Visa Requirements in Africa
NORTH AFRICA
Morocco is very popular with backpackers looking to experience a very different culture, just across the Mediterranean from Europe. Egypt is also popular and both countries are fairly easy to get into quickly and without any advance visas.
Morocco
3 months without visa.
Algeria
Visa must be obtained before visiting.
Tunisia
3 months without visa.
Libya
Must visit Libya People’s Bureau in person to obtain visa as fingerprints are required. You won’t be allowed in if you have visited Israel.
Egypt
Visa can be obtained on arrival for stays of upto 30 days.
Chad
Visa required. Contact Chadian Embassy in Belgium for more info.
Sudan
Visa required for entry and exit and must be obtained in advance. You may not be allowed in if you’ve visited Israel.
WEST AFRICA
Lots of small mostly French speaking countries which almost all require visas. Most backpackers in Africa head to the East or Southern part of the continent where the visa situation is a bit simpler.

Visa required in advance.
Burkina Faso
Visa required in advance from consulate in London or embassy in Paris.
Ivory Coast
Visa required in advance from Ivorian embassy.
Cameroon
Visa required in advance from High Commision.
Cape Verde
Visa required in advance. Can be obtained from Brussels or Dakar if travelling through Senegal.
Equatorial Guinea
Visa required in advance from embassy in London.
Gabon
Visa required in advance from embassy in London.
The Gambia
28 days without visa. Extensions possible for D250 a month.
Ghana
Visa required in advance from Ghanaian embassy.
Guinea
Visas required in advance from Guinean embassy.
Guinea-Bissau
Visa required in advance. Nearest embassy to UK is Paris.
Liberia
Visa required in advance from Liberian embassy.
Mali
Visa required in advance. Can be obtained in neighbouring countries.
Mauritania
Visa required in advance. Nearest embassy to UK is Paris.
Niger
Visa required in advance from the Niger Consulate in Essex.
Nigeria
Visa required in advance from Nigerian High Commision.
Senegal
3 months without visa. Return ticket may be required.
Sierra Leone
Visa required in advance from High Commission in London.
Togo
Visa on arrival is possible, although it might be best to get it in advance.
EAST & CENTRAL AFRICA
Visas are easily available on arrival in Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania, countries which are popular with backpackers.
Eritrea
Visa required in advance.
Djibouti
1 month visa can be obtained on arrival.
Somalia
Visa required in advance. Civil war in progress, the country is split into 3 seperate regions. It may be possible to get visa on arrival in Somaliland near Djibouti. The British government advises against all travel to Somalia.
Ethiopia
Visa on arrival at Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa airports. Otherwise apply in advance.
Kenya
Visa on arrival for US$25 or in advance.
Tanzania
Visa available on arrival or in advance.
Burundi
Visa in advance required from Brussels embassy or neighbouring countries.
Rwanda
3 months without visa.
Uganda
Visa required in advance or on arrival.
DR Congo
Visa required in advance. If you have visited Rwanda or Uganda you may have problems at immigration.
Congo
Visa required in advance.
Central African Republic
Visa required. Contact embassy in Paris.
SOUTHERN AFRICA
Perhaps the most hassle free region in Africa when it comes to entry requirements. Several countrys require no visa at all.
Angola
Visa required in advance, well in advance.
Zambia
Visa on arrival for US$80 or in advance for US$50.
Malawi
Free 30 day visa on arrival. Can be renewed for extra 90 days.
Mozambique
30 day visa can be obtained on arrival or in advance.
Madagascar
30 day visa on arrival.
Mauritius
90 days without visa. Return ticket required.
Zimbabwe
Visa on arrival or in advance from embassy for £35. Valid for upto 90 days.
Botswana
90 days without visa.
Namibia
90 days without visa.
Swaziland
30 days without visa.
