Visa Requirements in North & Central America

North & Central American Mainland


Travel here is pretty simple and no major forward planning is required as long as you remember to fill in your ESTA form if visiting the USA. Central American countries occasionally charge very small entry fees at the border.

USA
No visa required for stays upto 90 days. You must however provide your details online through the ESTA scheme. Visit esta.cbp.dhs.gov for more information.

Canada
No visa required.

Mexico
6 months without visa, tourist card must be completed on arrival.

Panama
90 days without visa. Return or onward ticket required. $500 or credit card also required.

Costa Rica
90 days without visa

Nicaragua
90 days without visa. $5 entry fee. Onward ticket required.

Honduras
30 days tourist visa available for free on arrival. May be extended twice for 30 days more at no cost.

El Salvador
90 days without visa

Belize
30 days without visa, 30 day extensions possible at BZD$60 each time.

Guatemala
90 days without visa


Caribbean

One of the benefits of Britain's questionable colonial past is that we still have close ties with many countries around the world, the Caribbean being one of the casing points. This means it's very easy and hassle free for Brits to get into these countries although this isn't really a major backpacking area. Cuba is gaining popularity and requires some forward planning.

Antigua & Barbuda
1 month without visa, extensions possible.

Bahamas
3 months without visa.

Barbados
6 months without visa, although you may only be given 28 days when arriving.

Cuba
Visa required from Cuban Embassy before travelling

Dominica
6 months without visa.

Dominican Republic
30 day tourist card on arrival for US$10

Grenada
3 months without visa.

Haiti
90 days without visa.

Jamaica
No visa required.

Saint Kitts and Nevis
1 month without visa, can be extended.

Saint Lucia
42 days without visa.

Trinidad & Tobago
90 days without visa. Extensions possible.
