Visa Requirements in South America

South America is a piece of cake for British and most other citizens. No visas are required in any of the popular backpacking countries and despite some warnings about the need for onward/return tickets we never found this to be the case. Just turn up at the border, get stamped on both sides and enjoy the next part of your trip.

Colombia
60 days without visa, possible to extend for a further 120 days when in Colombia.

Ecuador
90 days without visa

Peru
180 days without visa

Chile
90 days without visa

Bolivia
30 days without visa, can be extended to 90 days free of charge when in the country.

Argentina
90 days without visa

Uruguay
90 days without visa

Paraguay
90 days without visa

Brazil
90 days without visa

French Guiana
90 days without visa

Suriname
Visa required in advance. Can be obtained by contacting Suriname Consulate in Amsterdam.

Guyana
30 days without visa, can be extended in Georgetown.

Venezuela
Arrving by air you can stay 90 days without a visa, tourist card issued on arrival. Arriving by land or sea borders you need to apply for a visa in advance from a Venezuelan embassy or consulate.
